Watching while travelling: phone, mobile data and hotel Wi-Fi without surprises
The match does not wait for you to come home, and the series you follow does not pause because you are in a hotel. This guide covers how to watch on a phone, tablet or hotel TV while travelling, how much mobile data viewing really uses, how to handle crowded hotel and airport Wi-Fi — and what to prepare before you leave home.

Why watching on the road differs from home
At home you know your network and your device. On the road three things change at once: the network (mobile data, or hotel Wi-Fi shared with hundreds of guests), the device (the phone instead of the TV), and the clock (the time difference moves kick-off times). Hotel Wi-Fi in particular can be fast on paper but crowded in the evening, and some networks block certain kinds of connection or cut them after a while. Mobile data is usually fast but limited in volume, and high-quality viewing eats through it quickly. Preparing before you travel — an app installed and tested on the phone, quality set to suit the data — means you will not discover the problem in a hotel room minutes before the match.
How much mobile data does viewing use?
The figures are approximate and vary by source and app: medium quality usually uses under a gigabyte per hour, high definition roughly one to three, and 4K far more. On a phone’s small screen, medium or high quality gives an excellent picture, so there is no sense spending 4K data on it. Set the quality manually in the app before playing on mobile data, and check the data usage in the phone’s settings after the first match to learn your real figure.
Hotel and airport Wi-Fi
- Connect to the network and complete the sign-in page in the browser first; many apps will not work until this step is done.
- Test a channel as soon as you arrive, not minutes before the match — some networks restrict or slow streaming in the evening.
- If the hotel network is slow or restricted, a hotspot from your phone over mobile data is often steadier — provided your plan can take it.
- Do not enter your subscription details on public or shared devices, and do not leave them saved on the hotel TV.
A Fire TV Stick in the bag
A finger-sized device turns the hotel TV into your own screen: plug it into an HDMI port and into power, connect to the hotel Wi-Fi, and open the app you installed at home. Before travelling, make sure the app is installed and the details entered, and that you have its power cable with you. Some hotel TVs lock the HDMI ports or the source menu — if it does not work, the phone on medium quality is the fallback.
What to prepare before you travel
- Install the app on the phone and test it at home
A compatible player from your phone’s store, with the subscription details entered and a channel tested. Do not leave the first install to the hotel room.
- Set the quality for data
In the app’s settings, choose medium or high quality for playback on mobile data, and keep automatic quality for Wi-Fi. Some apps allow a different setting for each connection type.
- Turn on picture-in-picture
On the phone and tablet, turn it on in the system settings so the match keeps playing while you reply to messages or check maps.
- Convert kick-off times to your destination’s time
The time difference changes everything. Note the match times in the time zone of the city you are travelling to, not your home time.
- Prepare a Fire TV Stick if you prefer the hotel screen
Install the app and enter the details at home, and put the device and its power cable in the bag. At the hotel: HDMI, then power, then the hotel Wi-Fi.
The right internet speed while travelling
On a phone, a steady 5 to 8 Mbps is enough for medium quality and 15 Mbps for high definition; on the large hotel screen the target remains 15 Mbps for high definition and 30 Mbps for 4K. Stability matters more than the number on crowded hotel networks — a slower steady connection beats a fast fluctuating one.
Pre-travel checklist
- The app installed on the phone, the details entered, and a channel tested before leaving.
- Quality set manually for playback on mobile data, and a plan large enough for the viewing hours you expect.
- Picture-in-picture turned on on the phone and tablet.
- Match times converted to the destination’s time zone.
- A Fire TV Stick and its power cable in the bag if you will use the hotel screen.
- Subscription details kept private, and never entered on public devices.
Fixing the common problems on the road
Open the browser and complete the hotel’s sign-in page first, then reopen the app. If it persists, try a hotspot from your phone.
The network is crowded with guests. Drop the quality one or two steps, or use mobile data if your plan allows.
Check the quality setting in the app; high and automatic quality use far more than medium. Watch the usage in the phone’s settings after each match.
Some hotel TVs lock the source menu or the HDMI ports. Try another port if there is one; otherwise rely on the phone or tablet.
Watching while travelling — frequently asked questions
Does the subscription work outside my country?
Playback depends on the internet connection on your device. Test the app at home before travelling, and message us before you leave if your destination is the reason for your question, so we can confirm what applies to your case.
How many gigabytes does a full match use on mobile data?
Roughly: under a gigabyte at medium quality, and one to three at high definition, per hour. The figure varies by source and app, so watch your real usage after the first match.
Can I watch on the hotel TV?
Yes, through a Fire TV Stick or a similar device you carry with you, provided the hotel TV allows switching the HDMI source. Do not enter your details in the TV’s own apps.
Is phone quality enough for matches?
Yes; on a phone screen, medium or high quality gives an excellent picture and saves mobile data. 4K shows its value only on large screens.
How many devices can play at the same time?
We help you set up on two devices, with playback on one device at a time. If you need more than one screen, ask before ordering.
Can I use airport Wi-Fi to watch?
It is usually crowded and limited in time or speed. Set the quality to medium, or use mobile data if your plan allows.
Channel and content availability varies by source and plan, and picture quality and stability depend on your device and connection speed. App names and settings menus differ between versions; if you cannot find an option mentioned here, message us on WhatsApp with your device model.
